The Old Cape Wine Shop may be ‘dinky’, but that doesn’t stop it from stocking a wide range of great value wines. With just under 1,000 bottles on the shelves, only the best wines and bubblies make the grade. And, as blind tastings regularly attest to, ‘best’ does not necessarily mean ‘most expensive’. Indeed, owners Rael and Graham go out of their way to source wines that are exceptionally well priced.
 
Being different also helps. You’ll almost certainly find wines you have never encountered before, which is one of many reasons to join the weekly wine tastings. Held at the shop every Saturday throughout summer, tastings often feature not just wines but wine makers too! What better way to wile away the wait for a takeaway pizza from Blue Water Café than to taste a few special vintages while learning more from the people behind them? But don’t despair if you miss the tasting, there is always a cold bubbly just waiting to be picked up on your way back to the car!

Tasting Calendar for February

Saturday 4 February
This week we will be promoting wines from the Dombeya Wines

Dombeya Chardonnay 2010: The wine has a light green colour. The nose is inviting with fresh flavours of lime, peaches and hints butter at the end. The palate has a soft but firm entry followed by velvety butter flavour and stonefruits. This wine would be best enjoyed with food.

Dombeya Boulder Road Shiraz 2008: The wine has a lively purple red colour with exceptional aromatic flavours of violets, rose water, and white pepper. The palate is soft and elegant with sweetish flavours of Turkish Delight and red cherries which is a beautiful example of the flavours you will expect from the best Shirazes from the Rhone Valley in France.

Dombeya Cabernet Sauvignon 2007: Although still young with a tight tannins structure, the wine opens up with lovely black berry, cassis and cedar wood flavours. The palate is smooth with fine tannins and lingering fruity concentrated aftertaste
